Checked my records from last year, they show I sowed the first Padron peppers on March 6. As they gave a good crop, Ive sown again, on 8th, in a heated propagator.
These will be grown-on on a south-facing windowsill and planted out late May, when conditions allow.
Should mean that the "Spanish Roulette" season will open in early August.
Vamos!!
I had 2 bushes last year, which was far, far too few! I have 6 at the true leaf stage now and another set are going in the propagator when there's room. They are just too tasty!
Did you find the roulette was 'which one isn't hot?' One of them had my OH unable to speak for a few minutes. It was brilliant! ;)
Can't deny they are a scrummy chilli that I tend to stuff with cheese or mince meat at the green stage .....chicken.....I hear you call.....not really just Jude and myself are not hot chilli luvvers
I'll let one or two turn and use them as pizza toppings....or mixed in salads.....with a cold pint on hand in case I get a mouth burner.

They are proper tasty though, wish you well with your growing of them,I'm way behind
But will hopefully let the warm spring days help ours to thrive.
Gazza
I shall be sowing mine on Saturday and hope they fare better than last year's crop which was wiped out by a freak hailstone tornado whilst I was away for just 3 days and 2 nights. Couldn't trust OH to water them properly so put them all out in the veggie plot with the toms and squash and loads of other babies because the forecast was for warm weather and some showers. Shan't be doing that this year!
Sparrow, definitely last years crop were 1 mild and 9 hot, which made it even more fun in the bars.
Gazza, that plate looks great, and yes their flavour is fantastic.
Obbelix, wish you better luck with weather, (and OH's watering) this year
Thanks Pescador. Whilst pruning the hydrangea paniculatas last week I found all sorts of pitted scars on their stems where they got hammered and it's the same on all my shrubs and roses. That hail was vicious and shredded my rhubarb too but that recovered. Hostas not so happy and none of my salads and brassicas survived.
Fingers crossed no more such hail storms this year and I won't be leaving my plants to the mercy of OH either.
First one had emerged this morning! They must be in a hurry!!
That is fast. You must be feeling chuffed.
8 up this morning!!!!
1 week from sowing and 18 out of 24 now emerged. Silver foil reflector now in place to maximise sunlight and keep them straight.
I'm like a dog with 2 tails!!
23 out of 24 happily germinated, 2nd batch going into propagator today.
Harvested 40 yesterday and did an impromptu Spanish Roulette at my local hostelry last night.
Put 2 plates on the bar, and thought I'd better have the first one, which I duly did.
Asked hoe they were, I confidently replied "Fine!", But it sounded like I'd been breathing Helium!!
Bluddy Hot!
Must get some fresh seed next year, I think I must have saved from a hot one, as they all turned out ring-stingers!!
They get hotter towards autumn, at least in my experience. We had some last night. I lost the power of speech for a good 5 minutes and OH got hiccups.
Why do this to yourselves!!? :glasses9:
Until this point they taste fantastic. Even my step daughter eats them. I'm not eating any of the others now.
My Padron seedling has a flower bud on it this morning :)
I've not even sown any this year as I've been a bit unwell, but will have to do double the volume next year to make up!
No Spanish Roulette down the local this summer. I won't be very popular!!
Mine are just going into their final pots, are 40cm high and flowering. This might be something of a gloat...
I am really impressed with growth habit of these...growing stocky and strong, with earlier budding than other varieties I sowed at same time. Looking good!
What size/ roughly how long in length are the fruits when you folks pick them? Pescador, do you store any of them?
we only have 4 pots with them growing on I pick them early around 4 ins average,i prefer to munch on them over a few weeks
just flash fried or stuffed ....ill leave freezing to those that prefer it.
Thanks Gazza, will have some for tea then :)
What do you do on a cold wet Sunday?
Despite telling myself for a couple of hours that it was 4 weeks too early, I gave in and sowed a dozen Padron peppers today.
After not doing any last year I need to get a really good crop this year, so one sowing today and another in 4 weeks time, and pray for a good summer!
10 out of 12 emerged in 7 days.
Just need some sunshine now!
