Title: Anyone tried growing Rooster potatoes?
Post by: George the Pigman on January 10, 2015, 19:21:02
Has anyone tried growing rooster potatoes?
They are supposed to be the ultimate one-for-all potato in terms of cooking but I understand that they can be difficult to grow well.

I noticed one of our local garden centres had some rooster seed potatoes in last year....but in very small bags with only about six potatoes in.

I tried two varieties ( I cant remember what at the moment) in my new plot last year and although they cropped very well, they were both riddles with slugs.

I will try some types this year but Im undecided what types yet.

I planted one a couple of year ago that a friend donated, and got 18 good size baking potatoes off it. Was quite impressed, but haven't invested in buying any proper seed potatoes. I haven't heard anything about them being difficult. Where did you hear that?

In my experience, Kestrel are much more slug resistant than any other variety.

I found Setanta to have resistance too because the skin is so tough, but in some cases there is a mere pin prick of a hole in the skin and a cavity within - not as large as slug damage usually is, but there.
