Title: Polyanthus + ???
Post by: Poppy Mole on July 13, 2014, 10:12:29
I have quite a few polyanthus to move into another bed, what can I plant with them to provide colour during the summer/autumn?
I would really like a very dense planting to overcome the weeds if possible.

A lot depends upon you wanting perennials or annuals to fill the void.

For example I have spring bulbs ( Daffodils Crocus and Snowdrops) followed by my Polyanthus all of which are perennials.

When I cut back the spring bulbs  I fill the void with annuals which could be anything from Petunias, Pansies or even Statice which bloom after the Polyanthus have finished and also give me some dried flowers to display in the house during the winter months.

In this way I have a bit of colour around the place all the year round.

Something I am trying out this year on a couple of my beds is; I have planted a collection of winter and summer flowering 'Heathers' behind my Polyanthus which hopefully in the fullness of time will give me the effect you desire, plus I hope it will create beds that require 'minimal care'

So as I said; decide what you want from your bed but be careful with ' ground cover' plants as they may swamp your Polyanthus in time.

I hope this info promotes ideas!....Tg
