Title: My cucumbers
Post by: Gillian on March 19, 2005, 09:14:15
My cucumber seeds have grown really tall (they're about 10 cms now). I posted a picture here http://www.mytinyplot.co.uk/ a couple of days ago when they were 5cm. Is this natural? They seem to be really top heavy and a couple are falling over.
I have them in my loft room which is sunny and warm.

I've never grown cucumbers before so don't know what to expect.
Any advice?

Oh, dear - nowhere near enough light.

Now that they are germinated, they should cope with a temperature of 50F, so your priority now is light rather than warmth. Try reflecting daylight with alu foil. If you can't give natural light, try a daylight bulb a few inches above them during daytime.

Actually, they could be potted up at this stage - sink them to just below the seed leaves.

I planted some cucumber seeds last Saturday and they were up by Sunday lunch time!  :D. They were in a heated propagator though. Has anyone grown Crystal lemon cucumbers? I planted some seeds yesterday and hope they will be successful.

I grew Crystal Lemon last year.
The fruits were tasty, but large seeds inside.
They kept well in the fridge.

Thanks for the advice - I think I'll try to pot them up before they become monsters!
