Title: Shallots. Is anyone thinking of lifting them?
Post by: strawberry1 on June 07, 2014, 13:21:16
I have 20 fine looking jermor shallots, planted last autumn. Weather looks very iffy for days to come but I think I will go up and harvest tomorrow, I will just have to bite the bullet and dry at home. I take a long range weather forecast and the whole of june looks damp and very wet at times, no definite periods of warm and dry. Oh well, I have to think positive and at least I can get them up from their raised bed and bung dwarf french beans in

Didn't plant any shallots this year but my garlic is looking ready and has got rust so will be digging those soon.

My autumn ones look nothing like ready ... and looking at the weather forecast I can't see anything to get that worried about.  I think you have to make a decision based on your local conditions - but mine are full of green, growing well and with very little bulb to speak of at present so I will wait.

didn't do shallots this year but like Caroline, my garlic is ready (and rusty too!). It's not very big, not a very good year for alliums for me.
I want to rip 'em out and replace them with a row of carrots, turnips and beetroot.

Well, mine are still sitting on a table waiting to be planted!  Hopefully I will get them in this week.

Shallots not ready yet. Planted garlic last year with cloves from a couple of huge bulbs brought back from Spain, maybe elephant or even a Spanish variety unknown to me, just lifted them and the bulbs are huge and smell really strong, should last the summer, outlay on the original bulbs 20 p, not bad value that

My less successful specimens are dying back, but I'm going to wait till the biggest are doing so before I lift anything.
