Title: begonia splitting?
Post by: nitiram on March 17, 2005, 16:33:55
I know this is a houseplant question..sorry.

I have this seven year old begonia, that has always produced masses of flowers, I do the usual..letting it die done twice a year and dry out. But it has grown HUGE.Is there anyway I can split the corm? On closer inspection it looks as if the flower stems and leaves are shooting up from smaller corms on top of the parent one which is now 6" across. i don't want to lose it as it was  my late mothers. Any ideas folks?

Hoi Joy

I've checked all my Information on Begonia Rexs

I would say have a look on www.Gardenersalmanac.co.uk

There is a Section on Begonias you might find the Answer there.

Section on Leaf Cuttings................could be the Answer to Growing a New Plant from your Mothers

Thanks MIke, got the website now.  The begonia is not of the Rex variety, have grown those successfully from leaf cuttings, but a flowering begonia that comes up from a corm, you know the type, you water from below as water from above rots the corm, you dry it off completeley twice a year..I want to know if I can split the actual corm? Any ideas?

Joy :)

Sorry Im new with Begonia's myself Just starting down that road.................BUT Im sure someone will give us both the Answer ???

I have three  normal Corm Begonias the Flowering Type
I give them a light spray above every couple of days and Water beneath when it feels dry.

Should you be doing Cuttings from Mum's Plant.....I will do an Exchange  Seeds whatever.....PM if its possible
I would like that very much
