Is there a particular variety of pumpkins that is better for the English climate? Any recommendations?

Big, but not larger than a small child ;)  I'm thinking for carving on Halloween.

I was given some from a forum member, called jack o' lantern. They grew really well, needed lots of feeding but we got 4 per plant, good size and our grandchildren were made up with them  :happy7:
