Title: Is anyone growing or grown Crown (umbellate, tufted, crowned or fasciated) peas.
Post by: Jayb on March 03, 2014, 10:51:11
I've grown Salmon Flowered which I thought delightful, and this year have some Mummy White seeds from Robert B via the Seed Circle, which I'm very much looking forward to growing. But are there any other similar Crown/faciated pea varieties anyone knows of? I very much like this type of pea and would love to learn more  :happy7:

I have a very dwarf one which goes by the name of of PI269787 Umbellata. I think it must be ex-seedbank. It's a strange-looking thing, with flowers that didn't open properly, and I ended up wondering whether it was growing as it should. I don't have enough seeds to share, but I'll be growing it out again this year. There's another which is either the same as or very similar to Salmon Flowered. I think there are more varieties out there, but if so I haven't found them yet.

Thanks for the information Robert. Your dwarf sounds both interesting and an odd sort! Do you think it was perhaps the heat in part stopping the flowers open properly?
What name does the possible similar Salmon flowered go by?
And what was the crop like from your Mummy Pea?

I had seeds for a White Crown pea from a swap, I think the year before last, but it turned out to look exactly like Salmon Flowered.

The Mummy Pea was the one that looks like Salmon Flowered, while one that was labelled as umbellate wasn't. I think labels may have got mixed up. I'll grow them out again this year. The heat could have got to the umbellate one; it looked extremely odd, and produced very few seeds. The only time I've seen peas looking like that before was when the pigeons really hammered some, but they never got near these.

Ah, sounds very much like the white one I was sent before. I noticed on a Canadian seed site they described their white flowered Crown peas as also having pink flowers, I'll see if I can remember where.
