Title: What has pinched my winter onions - again?
Post by: lottie lou on January 10, 2014, 21:20:45
I planted a few rows of walla walla sweet onions last Sept/Oct in a raised bed cloched.  They are blooming missing again.  Think it must either be slugs or mice, any ideas?  Also planted winter onions in trays to start them off but its taken that long to get them going,  does anyone known when would the latest date be to get a crop?  Thanking you in advance.

I tried Japanese onions from seed this year and they were gradually all taken out by slugs/snails. I suspect with it being so warm they are still about, in fact I found a few slugs on the move today. I replaced the lost onions with sets and they are all doing well under cloches. They are under cloches to keep the rain out not because its cold. I was worried they might drown.

I have always grown walla walla onions as 'summer onions'..sown seeds early spring and planted the young plants when large enough and they have grown well and into large size too. I've never tried to grow them as 'winter onions'.
So good thing is that once the cold spell is over..you can start them again..this time try them away from slugs..
If you can..do them in GH...planting them into plug trays..and transplanting them when they are that little bit larger and tougher..slugs don't bother them anymore when they are not so tender .

It seems that wet is not good for them, and this is how  lost mine the first year I tried to grow as summer onions (2012   :BangHead:)
