Knitting is one of those 'life is too short' activities for me but I was curious so googled and found this site - http://www.alandart.co.uk/products-page/  which has some very inexpensive patterns listed.

On the quilting front, I have joined a local group to get some tips on how to get it right - patterns, cutting, sewing etc - and realise I'm going to have to be very accurate with everything to get pieces to join up correctly and have even blocks.   More fiddly than sewing clothes but I'll get there.  A friend has also given me first refusal of all her patchwork fabrics as she's giving up aowing to failing eye sight.   Pity as she's done some amazing quilts.

All this to say thanks for giving me the impetus.

Thank you Ob, how exciting for you to have joined the quilting group, there will be holding you now.

I am familiar with Alan's site but he only keeps the current ones and there are many many more, but thank you for trying

I don't have any Alan Dart Patterns, I had to look him up, but have been buying knitting magazines and knitting toys.  Knitting has become popular lately and there are knitting groups popping up near here.  My sons new partner wants me to knit her a poncho, but it is cable and looks complicated, but I may have a go.  Toys are good, quick to knit and it doesn't matter too much if they go a bit wrong.

Thanks dear, but she has already given me the pattern, Sirdar, demuim ultra, Poncho 8442, knitted in four panels, the wool costs about £50 and I did ring Sirdar and ask if I could buy it made up, but they said no (was going to cheat and say I knitted it for her for Xmas, but looks as if I am out of luck.  I am going to try the pattern in old wool first, but think this one may be abit of a challenge for me.  If I go to the knitting circle next week maybe I can get some advice.  What do you knit with the Alan Dart patterns.

No probs but can I just say,if you are unfamiliar with cable, it is not as difficult as it looks, it slows you down a bit so allow a bit longer to do it, however that pattern is quite involved so I agree it may be a bit more challenging, it is very nice though.  The good thing about cable is you can see your mistake pretty much straight away.. Good Luck XX Jeannine

I used to use a double pointed needle for holding the stitches for the cable.  Its a bit longer than the standard cable needle and the stitches don't keep sliding off.
