Title: Squash review and taste tests
Post by: Jayb on October 13, 2013, 16:29:28
It's been a good year for squash and pumpkins, and I'm just wondering what has done well or not for others. It might be a bit early to start this thread for taste as most won't have fully matured flavour yet, but perhaps it won't be long? First up for me;

I wasn't expecting to enjoy Gem squash so much. As a mature fruit it's not particularly sweet, but it does have a lovely dry tasty flesh although this looks a bit stringy. It's really good mashed with a little salt, pepper and butter or olive oil. Quite surprised, I would happily eat this instead of mashed potato!!!!!! Maybe not all the time but a quick and tasty alternative.  Quite early to get going and the vines were incredibly productive with lots of fruit. I think these are better eaten at an earlier age as the summer squash they are, but I let most of mine get away from me.  I will grow them again next year and try and keep up with them better although I'd like to leave some grow on as they are decent portion size and a tasty interim until other varieties are ready.

I think Hooligan will be my next to eat, although it looks like T&M messed up as the two vines I grew are different from one another. So much for selling me an F1, they do look cute though. Might even save a few seeds to see what they produce, has anyone tried this?

I'm interested if anyone grown Butterbush F1 before and how they rate it? I'm thinking of growing these next year.

Grew hooligan a few years back.  A tad too sweet for me though.  I thought it was a bush variety well mine were.  Quite pleased with my harvest though.  About 15 of those dreaded sharks fin of a rather heavy size, in fact lugging five home today my trolley bit the dust, and about four decent size pumpkins.  Haven't tried any yet as only harvested a couple of days ago.

Sorry your trolley is no more, can it be salvaged?
