Bought yesterday a clematis macropetala to grow against our fence. It has beautil coloured flowers but we were told not to plant it outdoors yet ! I thought all clematis were hardy, but obviously not.
I have put it indoors on our kitchen windowcill and hope it will be happy there until the sun gets a little warmer.
First of all not ALL Clematis are hardy, there are quite a few which will only grow in a Conservatory or against a South facing wall in favoured areas. However C. macropetala is as tough as old boot leather. The only reason I can see for not planting out at present is if it has been kept in a warm environment to bring it into early growth for selling. In which case, yes wait until the soil has warmed up a little and frost is less likely.
Thanks Eric for your kind reply.
The plant was in fact stored in a large heated greenhouse.
I will keep it indoors until all danger of frost has passed.
:D
Beautiful plant yer macropetala but I lost mine to scale insect so keep any eye out :)
