Title: KILNER SCREW TOP TWO PIECE JAR LID QUESTION
Post by: Duke Ellington on September 21, 2013, 14:24:43
I know I have asked this question before but does anyone know of a lid plastic or metal that would fit a screw top Kilner jar. I cannot find anything to fit. I would like to use another lid once my jam etc has been opened and I am storing in the fridge. It would mean I have more of the Kilner  rings available for my next batches of preserves. Hope this makes sense.

I know it my fault....rambling again. But I am after a lid from another jar that I can use as a replacement lid once jam is open. So for example...you might know that Nescafé coffee lids will fit a Kilner jar. I am trying to find something that will fit Kilner jars.

I am guessing but having helped someone  else  in the Uk off the forum this week I may have the answer for you.

As I understand it Kilner do a clip top and quite recently now do a 2 piece screw on lid, which I think is the same type of thing we use over here.

here the tow piece lid comes three sizes, a wide mouth, a standard and an odd rarely used size called a Gem( you can look these up on the net, look up Mason jar lids).. I am not sure if Kilner offer a range of sizes but take a look on their site.

f you get no joy there, measure the widest part of your jar and let me know and I will check the lids I have here.

You can also buy plastic lids that fit all three sizes of jars here too., not much to send them over if you are stuck.

If you look on Amazon UK under plastic Mason jar lids you will find a box of 8 that costs 19.58 sterling(about $30), then if you check out Amazon US the same thing is $5.91, then Amazon Canada is $3.87... what a difference eh.. If you cannot get them over there without a mortgage I can get these in my grocery store and send you a box if they will fit.

Mayo jars her fit the standard sizes jars and I am pretty certain that Helmans mayo is over there, but they won't fit the wide mouth.

Duke did you know... once your jam is set you can remove the ring for storage and just leave the cap on as long as it is sealed well it won't come off till you prise it off or puncture it, you can't recycle those anyway, but the rings you use over and over again. So you don't need so many rings as you have jars.

I only have a few plastic ones which I put on an opened jar when if the fridge as it is easier than the loose cap or easier to open then the cap and ring(if you leave the ring on which I tend to do.)

If that is what you want them for you only need a few.

Hi again,
I have measured the diameter of my Kilner Jar and it measures 6.5cms. The measurement of the metal lid is 7cm.
Youd think I would be able to find something to fit it.  :BangHead:
Jeannine is this the same size as a standard Mason Jar?

Yes, this is a standard Mason jar,,not wide mouth, not Gem, just standard.. the jar is 6.5, the widest edge of the ring is 7 and the inner metal flat bit, what we called the cap in 6.5.

I have two plastic lids in my hand right now which are both of baking powder, they fit the jars perfectly.

I will look around.
