I've cleared some space on the side of the allotment and think I can squeeze in 3 trees - a late cherry, nectarine and apricot. As the space is now cleared I can get trees in tubs now or wait til Spring. They're not bare root so would you wait til Spring or prefer to get them in now?
Cheers
I would prefer get them in now....there is more moisture in ground during winter months and it helps the tree to establish its root system better before they start growing foliage again.
If they are in tubs anytime will do. A bit of fleece if the weather is likely to get too cold. But a light prune/tip out a week or two before you plant them seems to make them root out quicker. Make the hole a tight fit but rough up the root ball a little bit to make the roots stronger. A diagonal stake will stop them shifting in the wind, better than trying to ram a stake down through the established roots.
That's great, thanks to both of you.
