Title: Foreign Garlic
Post by: Old Ace on September 12, 2013, 08:03:05
Just back from Spain and brought back a huge garlic bulb, no idea what the variety is but it is the size of a large orange, the supermarket was full of them. Have planted them in hope, wondered if anyone has had any joy with stuff brought back or maybe they are just indigenous

Size of a large orange suggests that what you bought might be Elephant garlic.  I grow that every year here, stick it in during October and harvest like ordinary garlic.  It is related to the leek, rather than a real garlic.

Maybe you can compare google images to what you have bought.

I tried with some Spanish bought garlic and the result was terrible!
However my mate just buys garlic form Catford market and plants that with great results so I guess it is worth a go.

Thank you all for your responses, could be elephant garlic but never seen any as big. Planted some cloves so " suck it and see"

What size were individual cloves? A big heffalump harlic clove is about the size of a normal head of garlic.
