Title: confused raspberry
Post by: kingston boy on August 26, 2013, 17:38:38

hi all, time to ask for some help again. It seems all types of berries and doing super well this year and my summer raspberries (Tulameen) were no exception. I have what were sold to me 5 years ago allegedly Autumn Bliss. These plants are in full fruit now and i'm told they cant be A Bliss. The fruit is only large pea size and ridiculously sweet. The plants are about 4 ft tall and very spiky Can anybody help with an ID for this definitely not Autumn Bliss

Are the stems spiny if so you are nearer to autumn bliss, if the fruit is small may be lack of water.

yes they have a very spiny stem. This has happened every year since ive had them. I use a holed hose to water, when required. I fed the ground Epsom Salts and used seaweed meal as a fertilizer. I think I'll dig them up part row at a time so at least i have some berries

I took over a plot, in the corner was a jungle of very weedy raspberries, I dug all these out the soil underneath was very poor ( we are on very sandy soil ) anyway I dug out a trench filled it with compost leaves/grass cutting and manure then planted my own Joan J in this ground, they have romped away so it may be worth while trying to improve the soil under rather than chemical feeding.
