Title: Planning holidays
Post by: katynewbie on August 10, 2013, 10:23:11
Due to March/April being a busy time at the plot I avoid going on me hols at that time of the year. This year I have not grown tomato/chilli etc because I am away in September. When would you go away and not feel anxious about your plants? The obvious answer is to go in winter, but we all need a break in the nicer weather too?!

Anytime I  like. My missus would look after the plants.

If you have the dosh for long haul, going South in February is quite nice.  It is something to look forward to after Christmas plus when you get back it is Spring!

We used to go to Sicily for the first week in February every year
because there is an international music festival just near where
we stay.  The weather was warm enough during the day for us
not to need jackets, but a bit cooler at night. The weather in  November is also
very pleasant.

Mind you, if you are a keen chilli-grower, February is no good for you.

I like to go in January. It is lovely in Egypt at that time of year, and reasonably cheap.   Though I do find that they are touting for tips all the time which I find very off putting.   It would have to be a beach resort because all the history is out of bounds at the moment.   I did that this year, so was hoping for a bit of culture next year but seems unlikely.

However I am rather concerned by the political situation.   Even if it is safe in Sharm El Sheik I feel I want to support the Copts (Christians) who are being attacked and  therefore feel I should boycott Egypt.  Except I do like my January sun fix and you get quite a lot for your money.  When you get back it is normally feels very cold.

So I am looking for an alternative destination.  Have been to Cuba in the past but the political situation is weird there.   And I never adjusted to the time change so I never got to eat dinner and it is much more expensive than Egypt.

I went to Malta in February a couple of years ago and spent the entire time tripping over brass monkeys.  I had to go out and buy a thick tracksuit.

Turkey can be nice in November.     But not sure it is warm enough in Jan and it is their wettest month.

As  I still have school aged kids I have no choice but to go away in summer ! We are off next weekend. My neighbour has promised to remove my courgettes for me, lovely people, and to pick any tomatoes that are over ripe. I did plan my beans though so that the runners should (fingers crossed) just be giving when we come back and the French beans should have beans first week of September.
