When are people thinking of harvesting their main crop spuds this year? Last year we did then really early due to the edt but wondering do I do them end of august before we go away or middle of sept
As long my potato tops are healthy, I let them finish they growth naturally and not rushing to dig them out for sake of it.
That will give chance for most of smaller one to grow into decent size and I'm left less with volunteers following spring :icon_cheers:
Its been 'funny' 'old' year..tops with my second earlier are still green and those that I've dug up have had really good size potatoes, almost 'bakers' :drunken_smilie:
Can't complain with spud crops this year :icon_cheers:
Basfordlad in case of blight I would take the foliage off at ground level before you go away but dig them up after you return as they will keep growing during that time.
I have just done mine but they had already died down. A pretty good crop from Desiree, always so reliable, but I was disappointed with the Allianz ones (I bought the seed at a market, maybe that was a bad idea), the spuds are very small. Best ones I had were the Claustar type from last year, but I couldn't find them again. I still have the Pink Fir Apple to go, they still have plenty of foliage so I will dig those in September.
