Hi Cam,

I use Access Database for the vegetables where I have rare varieties and do a lot of seed saving - ie squash, salad stuff, tomatoes, beans and peas.  The others I don't really list and go through manually once during long winter evenings.

The databases get updated every time when new varieties arrive or when I have saved a fresh batch of seed.

Whatever method you use, the most important entry is the 'sow before' or the age of the seeds.  This helps to stop carrying seeds that have gone past germination.  If for whatever reason those can't be sown the year they should be, they could be placed in the freezer and used at a later date.

The other most important entry (for me anyway) is listing what is special and unusual about a variety.  For example a pepper that has fruits sticking up, rather than hanging down etc.  This helps get to know vegetables better and appreciate their unique differences and how to recognise them in future by a few characteristics.

Having to start again is not a pain (although it is a shame you lost all that info) it is an opportunity.  You can list what is important to you in a way that is useful to you.

I have no method I am afraid. I have a tin box for the beans and peas and squash and a handyman organiser with little drawers for the rest. I go through them when I am ready to buy seed and I am afraid it stops there. I use my blog to track what I sowed and when.

It is impotant to store your seed in a cool dry place.
I use the lowest part of the fridge in paper envelops(not plastic!)
Don't forget to write the date you collected it.

Daveylamp,  it was part of my Windows Office package.

There are free versions of database software around too:

Some are compatible with Windows.
