Title: Storing Garlic
Post by: TheEssexYorkshireman on July 24, 2013, 08:20:07
Last year we platted the bulbs and hung them in the kitchen (used the last good bulb about a month ago). This year has seen an even better harvest and there really are too many to plat and hang. Should I store the cleaned and trimmed bulbs in net bags as I do my onions? What do you think is the best way?

Thanks

Platted and hanging in the shed will be fine. But in damp winter conditions maybe in the garage which will be drier..

I dry and store my garlic on those 'blue' vegetable trays that shops give away :icon_cheers: I cut of dried stems..rub off most of the mucky skin and trim the roots so the garlic is quite clean for storage..nicer to handle too when cooking. Trays are then stacked and they take quite little room and if not over filled there is plenty of air gaps too for good storage.

I do the same as Goodlife, using stacking vegetable racks. It's vital to get them really dry before you put them in the garage/shed.

I also cut and freeze and also make chopped garlic with oil... (cut up and packed into jars, topped up with oil and microwaved for a few minutes till hottish to touch to kill any botulism) then use a teaspoon or two of the garlic then top up the oil as used.  Just a couple of different ways of storing.
