seeing as Gerry has not been able to get to the garden this year, the veggie garden has gone to the dogs.
But a few leeks that were left in from last year have grown to about 2 ft, 2ft 6 high and flowered, and are now in seed, I notice some blossom heads are pink and some are whitish. and a bit larger than a tennis ball.
Have also noticed this past couple days that the birds love the seeds, they are really busy in and out......

I've seen flowering leeks on one of the other plots and they are good looking flowers. I knew that bees like them but didn't know that birds like the seeds, although that's not surprising.
It's a shame about your veg garden and I sympathise.
I grow just one variety of leek at a time, heritage varieites, and leave them to go to seed each year...at the moment the Bleu de Solaise are flowering nicely.
I've never noticed that birds are interested leek seed heads?! Do you know what birds they are over there that like them?
They might be eating insects inside, if not the seeds themselves? Or in this weather - could moisture be collecting inside the flower head?
But yes, it's always a shame when the plot gets out of control. But at least leek flowers look nice and if you can stop the birds eating them all, you can sow them next year!
Just wanted to let everyone know that the user "qahtan" who's real name was Glory passed away on Sunday December 8, 2013, ( a month ago today ).
If anyone wishes to pass the info on to others they could. Glory was a good friend of mine, and she'll be deeply missed.
