Title: Pumpkin query
Post by: Tashsteve on July 13, 2013, 21:46:34
Hello all,

Brand new to this gardening malarkey myself and fiancé got an allotment this year so we are starting to learn about growing our own food.

My main plant has been pumpkins and I have put most of my efforts into trying to get these to do well. So far the pumpkin plants and flourishing and growing very fast and are quickly invading the swede's space! I am posting here as the pumpkins are starting to have many thin vines growing all over the plant. What are the purpose of these vines and is there anything I need to do with them? The reason I ask is that they have started to wrap around the plant in a similar way that the runner beans do to bamboo canes.

Many thanks for advice in advance

The vines just increase the size of the plant, creating extra roots to

The bigger the plant, the more it feeds the pumpkins!

So are they similer to runners on a strawberry? (Obviously they won't grow new pumpkin plants) but should I treat them like runners and pin them to the ground so they can root into the ground? Thanks
