my red garlic isn't growing and some seems to have died away. Can any one explain why, as the white planted just a little away is fine, both planted in march
Have you pulled up any that have died? any sign of grubs/maggots/ rot
Are the two types of garlic in the same bed?
yes their all in one bed,but haven't thought of pulling one and checking the bottom but will do so, if they don't produce much this year can i keep them as "seed" and replant next year ?
I wouldn't keep it for seed as the quality of a crop is usually determined by the quality of the seed.I had to pull my garlic early as it had started to rot. :sad10:
I dug up one of my garlic bulbs today just to see what's going on.

I am pleased with the size but will leave them in the ground for a couple of weeks.
Mine have been terrible this year and so have my shallots - barely larger than when they went in!
my bed were planted up with white Garlic looking ok but not brilliant, shallots looking great and the red/pink Garlic which was dying off. so dug one up nothing nasty under neath perfect little white balls ?didn't look garlicky at all or smelt much like garlic. Aim wondering if i was miss sold, i just cant remember if they were garlic shaped cloves when i planted them.
my garlic row is the best ever and due to very little I did. The summer before last I put 2 rows of garlic cloves in, a clove in each hole about 8inch apart. Last year due to the weather and other stuff, they never got pulled. However they all started to grow again the back end and now I have two rows and when I pull them up there are multiple bulbs come up. from big bulbs to small, but they are all getting cut up and eaten and taste great. I am now saving the best looking bulbs and will plant a bulb in a hole instead of just a clove.
My elephant garlic was attacked by leek moth, but it looks like the Nemasys Grow your Own has sorted that out (broad spectrum nematode thing) , of the other four Germidour and Thermidrome did OK, Marco was rubbish and Albigensian Wight was somewhere ion between.... looks like Germidour adn Thermidrome for future use then...
