I would like to know how many tomato plants would you put into one regular sized growbag? I have heard it is best to put grow bags on their side so that the compost seems deeper, what do you think? I like the idea of cutting bottoms off plant pots and sinking them into grow bags, in what way does that benefit the plants? I get a lot of my compost from my bins. Is it good enough to grow tomatoes in? Should I mix a bit of sharp sand into it to?
I put 3 tomato plants in one grow bag when I use them
Hi I would go for two or three and sinking pots in helps as the cane can be deeper and better support also increases volume of compost and easier to water personally I prefer pots or in the ground as less risk of drying out. If you are doing 3 consider a smaller variety in the middle as they are good at strangling each other ! Good luck
I give growbags a good thump and shake before planting, they reduce in size by about a quarter but have greater depth that way. I cut the bottoms off 2 litre pots and partially sink in 3 per growbag; that way when roots have filled the pots they continue into the growbag, making them less prone to drought. Before planting I water through the empty pots really well, pop in the plants and top up to halfway with a John Innes/ multipurpose compost mix. As the season goes on and the soil level drops a bit Zi remove the lowest leaves for ease of watering and top up with a bit more soil to keep them going. I've got 36 different varieties growing like this in my home greenhouse and another 12 at the little lottie one, works for me!
I never use grow bags. I put the compost in a large planter and plant two or three plants in each one, they are far more stable and don't dry out so quickly.
