Title: Could it be a cherry tree?
Post by: gerbera on June 23, 2013, 16:20:10
Hi,

I've just moved into a new house and have a small (grafted) tree on my front lawn. It's bearing fruit and has one small white blossom left which looks to me like a cherry blossom. The leaves are alternately placed on the branch and have rounded-edged serrations around the edge and no hairs on the underside. The leaves also have 2 little yellow/red tinged node where the leaf meets the leaf-stem (not sure of the right term for this!). The trunk has rings in the bark, which crumble slightly at the edges if rubbed. I have posted an album on photobucket, so will have a go at sharing it here.....although I'm never quite sure how to do it!

Thanks for taking the time to help me out on this one. I would like to know if it's a cherry tree, if so....what type? If it is, I'll be heading back to my lottie shed to get some netting as we have lots of birds flitting about!

Hi Gerbera,
Looks very much like a cherry to me, but further than that I can't say.
Looks like a good crop on there!

Are all cherries edible? I LOVE cherries, but would hate to bite into one and then die some terrible death!

And if they ARE edible, how will I know if it's an eating or a cooking cherry?

Sorry for being so dumb about fruit trees....it's my first one and has come into my ownership by sheer fluke.

I have a bramley apple tree in a pot waiting for collection from my mother-in-laws house... she bought it for me instead of an easter egg....bless! No doubt when I get it home, I'll have just as many questions about that!
