Title: Brassicas
Post by: goodlife on June 16, 2013, 17:55:17
This year all my brassicas are planted in one big bed...no netting just all manner of dangling bird scarers. They did work at first...but then we had few calm days and night and non of my scarers did move...in came the birds :BangHead: They haven't done any great damage..just some 'nibbling' but now they have had taste of it non of the scarers do the job anymore  :BangHead:
In other bed, just other side of the path is 'millions' kale plants that got scattered about when I had rubbish pile there....but do the birds nibble the kale plants? NO they bloody not :BangHead:..and yet on other side they do nibble the same kale variety.
For some reason brussel plants and Asturian tree cabbage don't appeal for them?? Asturian tree cabbage has pale green, very lush and large leaves...utterly delicious for my taste but seems that birds are not keen??? :icon_cheers:
Daubenton kales did get ripped into pieces during winter but now that there is other stuff available birds don't seem to bother those neither :icon_cheers:
Has anybody else noticed plants that do not appeal for birds?

It's the same with sunflowers. I have so many strong healthy ones but when I plant them the slugs get them. Definitely sods law.

The local pigeons love brassicas and pea shoots, but ignore beans and squashes altogether. Slugs, howeve, love the latter two so you can't win.
