it looks like some kind of begonia leaf that are normally the indoor variety, but if this is found outside, i'm hazarding that's still either a leaf or bark of something.

Nope, not ornamental cabbage. I tried growing them once, not great, feasted on by assorted beasties.

Sadly no, just cropping the pictures to enlarge a section of it. Image quality of the close up suffers somewhat.
