Title: Cut and come again salad
Post by: davholla on May 22, 2013, 13:44:44
Does anyone grow this?  Does it save money?
We don't have a greenhouse, I would like to grow it in the lounge by a south facing window but I am not sure if the boss will let me.
PS I am particularly interested in growing rocket and lettuce.  Although turnip tops would be nice but I guess impractical?

Cut and Come i grew in planters last year outside and to be honest i got sick of it.
Nothing stopping you from doing the same with lettuce, rocket i cant help you with as it is grown in the ground

As long as you've got reasonable light in the window, there sholdn't be a problem.
Cut and Come Again  are normally a mix of lettuce. oriental greens, chards and roquettes. Brassicas of all types will fit in perfectly with this mix

For minimal effort, minimum outlay, I recommend you try first with a tray of "living salad " from your local Lidl ( last time) 79p ,I got over 70 plants of various colours. Pot these up individually into 3"pots (I used square ones from the bedding plants cos they fit together on a window tray (Stewart plastics - Robert Dyas I think)  You might be able to keep 1 tray readily to hand and position others around on cills in strongish light and move them around. Crop them as required, taking outer leaves leaving the cente stem growing. If they start to "bolt, slice off low down and often they start producing again. If not, recycle ! Its easy to move individual pots  and bring forward others to keep supplying variety of leaf. Water as required with very dilute Bio or similar.
A few peas for sprouts could be interspersed, some oriental mustards ?, coriander and  sweet marjoram, its all down to your preference. You will be amazed at the quantity of leaf you can get per square foot!
