Title: Last year's spud - advice please :)
Post by: Bubbles26 on May 19, 2013, 09:27:17
Hiya, I'm sure this will have been asked before but I couldn't find it by searching, sorry!

It appears we missed several of our early spuds last year, not surprising they seemed to be everywhere! So now I have them growing in a couple of places.

My question is - if I leave them in and work round them will they be yummy - or will they be a bit hit and miss, in which case I will dig them out to make room?

What do ya reckon?  :tongue3:

Thanks

Most peeps miss a few and they nearly always get in the way so I dig them up because they will certainly be in the way its whats going on underneath the soil where they take up all the room. I found one yesterday inbetween my sweetcorn and its been a few years since I grew them there, others will tell you they carry disease and spread blight. I have one that is growing away from other plants and will leave it at the moment, I would leave the odd one as long as it is a foot square free of any other plants.

I would be tempted to remove, as Kev suggests they can be a disease risk

I dig them up if they're in the way or leave them if not, in which case they're usually a bit hit or miss.

Right - digging them up it is.

To be honest I grow more spuds than I need due mainly to how cheap they are at our allotment shop (£2 for a carrier bag full) and I always get earlies and main so even after giving some away there is more than the two of us can eat so really no point as they are in the middle of what I want to be my squash and sweetcorn bed.

Thanks guys  :blob7:

I dug up some 'volunteers' today. Some were sound but one or 2 were broken and were slug hotels so get rid...

Well, I had some volunteers last year, probably Charlotte, left them, dug them up later, and they were the best potatoes of a miserable year. Many that I planted carefully with huge heavy labour simply rotted in the soggy cold ground.
