We've had this subject come up every now and then..but could help bringing it up again.
I still keep finding all sorts under the soil..the usual bits of clay pipes I can find almost every day but very few head ends?? It is easy find the pipe stems and so far I've managed partial head. What did they do with the 'heads'?
Other day I dug up old pit pick axe head...lottie neighbour of mine could tell me that it was from very old type pit axe. He used one when he first started in pit as a young lad but soon those were chanced into different style.
Last night I found musket ball!!!!! WHAT!...I know there all sorts 'battles' between some allotment holders..but firing lead bullets !!:drunken_smilie:
Can't wait to weather to improve and go and do some more digging...more treasures :glasses9: I'm going to start 'curiosity box' and save all the bits and pieced that turn up....gardening is definitely not boring!
Anything 'new' surfaced up on your plot?
Often find assorted pottery, some of it is the thick old glazed type often green or brown, I've not found anything unusual for a little while though. Love the idea of curiosity garden box, think I'll start one of those (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-basic/cool.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)
Forgetting about the asbestos, rubble, car parts, plastic bags, window frames etc etc I now have an interesting collection of old bottles and jars and a mustard spoon.
However the most interesting item is a whistle which turns out to be a RAF aircrew survival whistle dating from 1943 which after cleaning up works just as it should and is complete with its little wooden ball. I'm still looking for the Spitfire!
Oh yes..bits of pottery here too and very fine porcelain ..they certainly did know how drink their teas with style during olden days. I've started to collect bits of pattered china..I may get whole cup together one day :glasses9:
Whistle in brilliant find..is there any owners marks or were they just generic without any identification?
I'm going to start foraging stuff together, I usually put my found bits into back of barrels or slab somewhere for 'later on' (usually forget them until for some weird reason they get dug up again from other spot :drunken_smilie:)..and hopefully soon post a photo of my treasures :glasses9:
Loads of puddles , :BangHead:i suppose they don't count?
The following are links to images of the whistle dug from the allotment. There isn't an owners mark but the markings are very distinctive and identical on all whistles of this type. It was therefore fairly simply to identify.
It would be nice to be able to attribute it to a particular person if not a previous plot holder but I suspect it will have come onto the site with all the other waste materials that a builder deposited about 10 years ago. I may yet ask the council to see if they can provide a list of plot holders since the 2nd world war and see if it can be attributed. Should make for an interesting winters project!

the links do not work
Not on the lottie as I don't have one but when we were sorting out our garden - ex pasture - to make a lawn and flower and shrub beds and a proper veggie patch we found a land mine. Quite exciting getting the bomb squad to come and check it was dead and take it away.
Worryingly, they didn't sweep for any more so we don't do deep digging..................
Quoteand a proper veggie patch we found a land mine.
whoaa..and all of the sudden my little lead 'ball' is not that 'violent' find anymore..must have been interesting day. Was it obvious straight away what you came up to...of did you do bit of 'knocking' first to find out what's inside :drunken_smilie:
I have altered the permissions associated with the links to the photographs of the whistle. Could someone please confirm that the following links are now working?
Thanks!

That's very interesting! Presumably they were for if you need help in allied territory.

At least they are useful :drunken_smilie:
As we are on former cow pasture and then had no fences, we got a man witha bulldozer to come and smooth out the rather bumpy land, scoop out a natural pond for drainage and dig out a base for the terrace which would follow. This was in autumn so it oculd all settle over winter. The following spring the same man went round with a machine to harrow the earth ready for sowing grass seed and he'd stop every now and again to remove big stones. One turned out to be a land mine, left by the Germans in their retreat east.
It's the only "interesting" find apart from when we had the same man come with another machine to scrape off the tarmac that had been laid bytu the farmers who were here before us to make their front courtyard easier to clean. It was part of the old cobbled road that ran past our house and over a bridge which is now too small so the road was diverted to a new one. We found a lovely paved road laid with 3" granite cobbles in a shell pattern at the turn of the 20th century. It has striations in the surface made by the allied tanks chasing the Germans east. Further on towards the village there are the same markings and the road is now classified and no more of it can be tarmacced.
I keep digging up bones recently......some big ones I think are buried by the foxes, but I have found a lovely little complete ? shrew or vole (I always get those two mixed up!) skeleton the other week just under the surface....and a Victorian glass bottle stop, but not the bottle...shame!
