Title: Tomatoes
Post by: Borlotti on May 14, 2013, 21:23:57
Seeing as the weather is not too good here at present has anyone put their tomatoes out in the garden/allotment.  Some people have at my allotment, but mine are still in the leanto.  Saw tomatoes plants for 79p each in Morrisons and strawberry plants for a £1.  Am adding up what I have saved as have just paid my allotment fee (£84. this year), so hopefully will get plenty of apples, strawberries.  So far just some rhubard for next door, as not too keen, and some everlasting spinach.  Some of my seeds are very slow in the unheated plastic greenhouse, roll on summer.

Sowed my tomato seeds in March and they are only just about moving, just hope this weather picks up soon. And yes, some of our  :drunken_smilie:allotment members have already got tomatoes in their green house. Lucky sods!

I put mine 8 surviving plants out 10 days ago, under mini greenhouses made of half plastic bottles, added bubble wraps outside the mini with elastic bands, they grew little but hope the roots settle better.

However, I am not expecting much from them because the forecasted wet summer and the long cold spell in April and May...

yes it doesn't bode well on weather evidence so far for a good tomato summer with the odds on blight like last year.
I'm hoping my strategy of growing the 'best' early varieties will work
