Title: Plants know best
Post by: Borlotti on April 22, 2013, 17:26:48
I know that you should test the soil, but has anyone noticed that plants know best. Dug a lovely bed for the strawberries, and they did OK, but planted a few in another place and they love it there, have spread everywhere. I now tend to listen to the plants and they tell me where they want to grow, if I don't listen they just wilt and die.  I know that you should rotate the crops but mine seem to like it where they are, but am just talking about redcurrants bushes, rhubard etc.  Rhubard is a bit fed up with me, and is in a raised bed and not too happy there. Runner beans will stay in the same place as they like it there.  One exception, the mares/horse tail likes it everywhere on my allotment.

Yes, I have noticed that too. I've got part of the garden where I just cannot grow decent runner beans and I have finally given up for even trying them there anymore. One other bed I get beautiful brassicas, beans and sweetcorn..but try to grow potatoes and seed potatoes are wasted. I didn't believe my instinct last year and yes..had very disappointing amount of spuds for all the hard work I did :BangHead:
I used to have very productive asparagus bed..then I decided to do bit of organisation of what 'goes where'..my asparagus didn't like the move and died  :BangHead:..tried with new plants in other parts of garden with no luck. I'm just it progress of doing yet another lot of crowns..and this time the soil will get some special attention for it. I know what soil they liked first time and I will fetch some of the 'same' soil from same source again..hard work but I'm determined to make it work again :glasses9:

I take photos with the date on mid-way through the growing season so I can refer back.  I only have 4 raised beds, but the years coalesce the older I get so the photos are a necessity  :tongue3:.
