Title: Brassicas I am having a nightmare!!!
Post by: steve1967 on April 22, 2013, 16:09:39
Hi All,

For some reason my brassicas are really struggling. The seed leaves have developed a purple tinge with no true leaves forming on most of them. They were sown 10th March moved to a heated greenhouse once they had germinated.

I have never had a problem like this before and would welcome any advice.

Thanks
Steve

Steve, Discolouration of the cotyledons could well imply that they have run out of food.
What compost did you use? I'd try giving them a soak of a general purpose liquid feed, such as Miraclegrow.
It is strange though, that they haven't produced any true leaves yet

I gave up doing brassicas under cover as I found they get too hot and they prefer some cooler conditions - I now wait (like, until this week!) and sow them under fleece in a seed bed outdoors, well watered. I think I have reasonable success with them, always getting good sprouts and broccoli and this year I also got caulis, only the cabbage didn't work for some reason. I transplant when they are about 20 cm high and have a few true leaves.

I had a problem with brassicas a couple of years ago.  I was advised here on A4A to feed them.  High nitrogen.  They took off.

Now I buy more expensive compost.  Or use cheap and then mix 50/50 with recycled stuff.

When I prick out the brassicas they get half a flat teaspoon of BFB in each cell of a 12-cell seed-tray sized module pack, one plant per cell, I use New Horizons organic compost (though last year I think I was using a mix of B+Q and Lidl).... I  put  adusting of lime in there too, there's probably no such thing as too much BFB for brassicas... they want to be not indoors as quickly as possible....
