Title: Potatoes in sacks
Post by: elhuerto on April 06, 2013, 19:17:04
I'm having to cut back on the allotment this year, the water usage is getting too much so one of things that have to be cut is the potato. We've never had great crops and for the space / water required they're top of the cull. I'm going to have a few in potato sacks which will save a lot of watering but it's not something I've done before - does anyone have any tips? The seed potatoes are well chitted and ready for planting. I assume it's case of half filling the sack and adding more soil / compost as the the first leaves appear - does that sound about right?

We only 1/4 fill the sacks, 3 spuds in and cover as and when. The ones in the poly have been covered 3 times so far and are peeping out again already  :happy7:

T & M sent out a news letter 2 year ago 1/4 fill bag put in 3 seed pots add some pot fertilizer, if you want 1/2 fill the bag add 2 more seed pots and fill to the top water as and when and that is it no need for fuss of filling the sack when the shoots grow it works have followed this way for the past 2 years.  :coffee2:

I tried an experiment last year and popped a good layer of shredded paper on the bottom of the bag before the soil was added and i still got a good crop with minimal additional watering (although it was wet last year) but maybe try that to help with water retention?

Good luck  :blob7:

The way this weather is going we will all be planting in sacks indoors. At this rate it will be middle of May before ground is fit to plant if at all.?

Thanks again, think I'll try the shredded paper - sounds like a good idea. Will also try quarter and half filling different bags and compare results.
