Title: Straw Bales near Bristol?
Post by: peanutbutter on March 31, 2013, 21:41:58
Hello every one!
I'm new to an allotment, and am hoping to do some straw bales to condition the clay soil for next year. I've done a search for suppliers, but not having much luck, only 1 or 2 come up under 'buy straw bale'
Any ideas where I can get some, with delivery? Or what search terms I should be using?

Many thanks!
Pea

Have you tried contacting any local livery yards or farmers, they might deliver, for a fee, manure is much better than just straw by the way,so try to get that 1st.

Animal feeds is what I would google if if you just want a bale or 2 to place under your strawberries or want to try out Straw Bale Gardens (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1591865506/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=1591865506&linkCode=as2&tag=aldershomodel-21).

For just adding to the soil, you will also need to add a load of nitrogen to help it rot down, the best way to do this is get a horse to piss on it, so as davey says, manure is a much better option.

Ask around the allotment site, see if anybody knows of a local supply of manure, if not check out local stables.

Thanks for the replies.
Yes it's for straw bale gardening, hoping to get 10 or so.
I haven't tried liverys or stables, so I'll ring around this week. The allotment I'm at doesn't have an association unfortunately.
