Look out for Aubretia, Phlox subulata, Campanulas, Armeria, Mossy Saxifrages and Saxifrages with names like cochlearifolia.  That should provide you with a good Set of beginners plants.

Most garden centres have a section for alpines, but be sure to give them the right conditions by adding lots of horticultural grit to the soil as you build your rockery, and use lots of rocks, burying them by at least 50%, and if you have plenty, 66%. This will provide a cool root run in well drained soil, something all alpines like.
