I would like to buy a couple of plants, and would like some advice as to which variety to go for please? Also, any growing tips would be fab, as I've never grown them before. My dad used to love eating them steamed when I was a kid, but it's been years since I've tried any.
Don't know what variety mine are, but if they throw up some seedlings this year, I'll dig a couple up for you. The roots are very long I think. Alternatively Goodlife sent me some seeds to start of this year and if you pm me I'll send you some. Think I sowed in April 2010, planted out around September and got a goodly crop off them last year.
Mine are mostly from side shoots given to me by relatives. I find them
very easy to grow, but they do make quite big plants so allow them enough
room. I mulch them quite heavily with straw and they have always survived
the winter here.
I grew 'Emerald' one year and it did crop the first year, the plants have since
got mixed up with the others I grow.

I could send you a couple of shoots of an un-named variety if you like.
I grew various from seed but the purple ones did not survive the -16 a couple of winters ago. Probably a good thing because the surviving green on is now enormous.
Thanks Lottie Lou and Squash, I would love a couple of shoots please. I did try growing some from seed a couple of years ago, without any success (can't remember what went wrong now though) but hope that I can't mess it up if they're already growing. Is there something that I can give you in return? I have some pieces of rhubarb root which are sprouting, or of course, a lot of seeds x
Elsie, if you PM me your address I'll put a couple in the post.
I don't really need anything in return, but thanks anyway.
