Title: Last years compost
Post by: Old Ace on March 03, 2013, 17:28:04
Grew my 1st earlies last year as usual in buckets of grow bag compost. After lifting i kept the compost and have just added to it after disposing of 2 blue spruce xmas trees. I have riddled it and now have a nice pile of black compost, Would this be ok to use this year for onions beetroot broad beans etc after adding chicken pellets or growmore

I used to use fresh compost each year but changed my ways about 3 years ago and have had no difference to the results.  For all my greenhouse stuff (peppers, cucumbers & tomatoes),  I mix 50/50 with half new and half last years compost each year.  They still get liquid feeds throughout the season too.  The rest gets put in my compost bin and spread over the allotment at some stage anyway.

Absolutely fine... you are still doing a rotation so no probs. Just add some fert as you say and a bit of manure if pos and you're away again.

I do the same every year for my flowers that I grow in pots I also buy xxx manure from the garden centre that and chicken pellets. I tend to do it in September so that the cold weather can kill off any blight or fungus that might still be in the soil. You have to be carefull I wash all my pots in  Jays swill clean then add the compost and feed . In fact started this weekend I put all the large pot on saucers and what ever water is in the saucers I feed back to the plants. You have to watch that you don't spread anything to your other plants not sure if this helps you but it will save you pounds if done right

I am wary of using it in the greenhouse or in containers but take it to my allotment and use it to help build up the soil structure (it's is clay soil!)
