Due to the wet weather I was unable to dig in organic matter to the soil.would it be ok to put new tree leaves in my potato trenches even though they have not started breaking down yet?
You might be better using them as a mulch. The worms will take them down.
I put comfrey leaves in the trenches with potatoes it is supposed to improve the flavour.
When you say new tree leaves do you mean from last autumn. I have buried a lot of mine and the worms get working very fast. Problem with using them as a mulch is they dry out and blow away.
They blow about a bit at first - not that much on my plot, but hedges help - but once they've been rained on a few times they settle down and don't move again.
By new leaves I did mean from last autumn.thanks for the comments.

That's what I do - recommendation from HDRA/GO to prevent scab. Which is also a handy reminder to plant potatoes as soon as the first comfrey leaves started re-growing after winter. When the conditions are right for comfrey, they are right for potatoes.

I like this. The plants have milleniums more experience of the weather than we do. It was very warm here last year during the last week in Feb so the comfrey was well up for the potatos. I was freezing in Malta.
