Title: ITV TELEVISION PROGRAMME
Post by: Paul O Grady on March 08, 2005, 10:04:21
Dear Allotment Lovers,

I am writing to you from the 'PAUL O'Grady SHOW' on ITV1. We are currently on the look out for the creme de la creme of allotments up and down the UK to showcase on our programme - and ultimately find the UK's first ALLOTMENT CHAMPION.

So...

We are looking for the most bizarre allotments in the UK... Have you converted your allotment into a Swedish sauna, or a nuclear bunker?

Do you have a themed allotment..? Have you transformed your greenhouse into an illegal micro-brewery or alpine lodge? …Or do you simply have the best kept allotment or grow the worlds finest horse radish..

we are on the look out for allotment fanatics to showcase their very own plots of land, whatever the story big or small get in touch:

Its not great weather for growing the best wackybacky outdoors.  I used to grow some in a cubbyhole  (well big enough to sit up in!!) in a wall in my first flat.  All the walls of the cubby lined with tin foil UV strip lighting, grew some lovely stuff :)

Ee Nattyem I don't know what to say other than tt!  ;D

Jim do you really think it's a wind up?  It's not you behind it is it?   ;)

If it's not and it happens I hope it's Lily Savidge that does the allotment tours rather than her alter ego.  More fun I'm thinking  ;D

I don;t think I would like my plot to be filmed - filmed isn't the right word, taken over by a tv production company with their hoards of camera people, sound recordists etc and the hassle.

Just reread the first post in this topic - fanatics I think is a dangerous word. If they want fanatics and the bizarre, then it doesn't sound like it would be a serious programme. Also, if you converted your allotment to a swedish sauna - it wouldn't be an allotment any more! And illegal microbreweries - well, would you like yours to be on tv for the police to see?

You're probably right multi, taken over would be what happens. Taken over and all your precious raised beds stomped over and compacted down, all your little weeny seedlings damaged etc etc   >:(

If Paul O'Grady is doing it I don't think they had in mind doing a serious allotment programme  :)

It sounds like they're after 'entertainment oddities' that just happen to be on an allotment.

Shame really, because there are enough oddities, funnies & general disasters occuring in trying to start growing stuff, nevermind the real corkers that experienced allotmenteers must have heard of / had happened to them.

Re bizarre allotments. I don't know if our allotment would qualify as bizarre, in fact not sure if it would qualify as an allotment!  To explain - my family and I (4 kids and a Hubbie) live in a lovely, but very small house in a lovely town.  However, my parents live in a lovely, remote farm house with lots of land (being a farm and all....).  After much laughter, my dad was persuaded to let us take a really rough area and clear it of nettles, brambles, barbed wire etc, and turn into an area where we grow veg.  This is the strange bit, I grow veg, the kids eat dirt, build bonfires and dens, and my husband flies planes and helicopters!! Small ones, I hasten to add! Basically, it's an area where we can do our own thing and still be in one place. unusual? Yes. Bizarre, you decide!!! ;D

You can buy the seeds perfectally above board in the UK, you just can't grow them.  Any hippie kind of shop will probably have them (though it may be dubious to how good/old the seed is).

I do have others but pull it up before it has time to grow properly...Now do you think the gang of teenagers hanging around know something I don't. ...Do you wanna do some weedin' man....... ;D..Whats a hippie shop?
