Hi All,
Its been a while since we organised a get together and i wondered up was up for it this year? And is there a location that might suit everyone?
Cam
I'd be interested if not too far away (from Liverpool)
Everyone is more than welcome to come to Brum!
I'd love to come :blob7:
I'd be up for a meet.
Brum works for me if it works for everyone else? Any venue in mind?
If you have not been before, the Wallsall Rd Allotments is a truly inspirational place to visit.

That's very kind of you Digeroo.
Not too sure about us being inspirational but we would love it if people
came here for the get-together.
We are fairly easy to find, just off a main road, with plenty of parking on site.
We have lots of cover in case of bad weather and most importantly, friendly plot-holders!
Shall we bring our own refreshments or will we be able to purchase any there? Hmmm numb bum on No. 11 then.
so we have a venue what about a date?? June or July??
Walsall Road gets my vote.
Ohh, pout pout, now I am jealous..I would have to fly over and need digs..have fun folks, pou pout XX Jeannine
Unless anyone else has somewhere to suggest for our meeting,
shall we say it will be at Walsall Road?
I don't mind which month, I'm not going away so it doesn't matter
to me.
I could make sandwiches and cake, or people could bring their
own. We have a kitchen and lots of shelter now that we have completed
our new veranda outside the pavilion.
Of course, it's early days and not everyone will have read this thread so
if anyone else has a different idea of where to meet, then that's fine
by me.

Sorry to put a damper on things, but I have been to two meets, and very few people actually turn up. Though I have very much enjoyed the company of those who have. Maybe they are all too busy digging.
I thought the turn-out at Barnsdale was pretty good a few years back- we had a really nice day! If people want to go, they'll go, if not no problem!
I'd love to meet the scarecrows in person! June or July would be good in the hope of some decent weather and some nice crops to look at!

I went to that one too, there was an amazing seed swap as well. I've been to Betty's site for one of the Open Days and it is fab, so I'm game for another visit..... :sunny:

It will give us lots more usable space in bad weather. I'm hoping it
will get quite warm inside
if we have nice weather in which case I might
pop a few tomato plants in it.
(//)
I would love to meet people but my knowledge of brum is about the same as the other side of the moon. Mind you I need some sat nav practice..
Car share would be good if anyone from N/E midlands/humberside.
Summer gets my vote as plenty of light for driving. Look forward to it :toothy10:
Looks amazing i cant wait am currently having a sort out of my diary so will have some date suggestions soon hehe
How about Saturday 20th July??
Why not? :blob7:
Will put in my diary - what time?
Suspect we need to give people traveling up time to get there so is 2pm to early or late??
A bit far for me I'm afraid, but it does sound like it will be a lovely time
Sounds good to me, but maybe those of us who can could meet in time for lunch?
I would be interested if I am free on the day.
When you say meet for lunch do you mean a proper dinner ie: pub lunch or something or do you want me to bring some stuff over to make butties.
I'm Free!!
What about everyone bringing something to share?

Sorry Lottie Lou, I wasn't sure if you were offering to feed everyone (kind ofyou!!) I love shared meals, its sooo exciting :toothy10:
I like the idea of a shared lunch.
It wouldn't really matter what time people arrived because I know
it will be difficult with some coming quite a distance.
It will be so nice to meet up again :icon_cheers:
I'd love to come it sound so exciting ,I may have to get a train unless someone is car sharing in Essex Chelmsford ? would love to see Betty's allotments :icon_cheers:
Will we all have to wear something to identify ourselves to each other ? Are we going to do a seed swap as well?

The train is good as there is a station nearby, I will be on the train but in the other direction as it's a bit too far to drive. (and the train is a real treat - you can sit and knit!)
Morning Pumpkin, your right the train is a wonderful treat, alas I don't knit ,do you think they will still let me on :sad10: :tongue3:

ALL CONFIRMED THEN :toothy10: :blob7:
So 20th July 2pm at Squash64 Walsall Road Allotments Birmingham
Seed Swap - HELL YEA :) hehe
Identification :- I think we should all bring a can of cat food for the cats on Squash64 site?? Squash64 what you think? I am pretty sure the sight of people carrying suitcases full of seeds, bags of cakes and holding a can of cat food we know your one of us :) hehe
Food - I think maybe finger food, cake etc would be great how we keep track of whos coming and what they are bringing i am not 2 sure maybe if people post on here i will try and keep track and then post an update every few weeks :)
The cat food is a really nice thought, thank you Cam. (but only if folks
want to, the cats will be happy to see you even without any food!)
I will pm my mobile number to all who let me know they are coming because
we keep the gates locked and you'll need to phone from the gate so I can
let you in.
How about if I make badges and give them out at the gate?
We are really quite easy to find, whether you come by car or train but if
you would like more information please ask me. There is a map on our
website.
There is plenty of on-site parking so just drive up to the gate.
The seed swap is a good idea.
Now we just have to hope for reasonable weather and NO RAIN on the day!
Lets up the :sunny: shines!
Would we be permitted to have a look around?
Quote from: markfield rover on February 28, 2013, 09:25:48

We can do guided tours or you can wander around on your own, our plot holders
are quite visitor-friendly
Could be a go-er! And looking at the photos of last years plant sale ,tempting to say the least!
I'll have to let you know a bit later but we would like to :happy7:

You have nearly five months to learn to knit. However crochet is easier to carry and you don't poke your neighbour with your needles. :drunken_smilie:
John and I have been discussing this tonight and are hoping to come, all being well healthwise.
We have a friend in the area that we haven't seen for many years so thought we would bring our caravan up and stay a few nights at Birmingham Caravan Club site. We can then meet you all on Saturday afternoon and visit her on the Sunday.
Betty, would I be allowed to bring my mobility scooter into the allotments and are the paths wide enough to be able to drive around it please?
THis sounds like fun so I'd put my self down as a probably... I can't think of anything else I'm doing in July, I generally don't have a festival in there as it's the gap between the ones in May (small), and GLastonbury (enormous) before and the ones in August (medium sized and small) ... I need the gap to service the kit after Glasters plus I'm aware of how much gardening needs to be done in July.... I can bring cakes... is anyone else heading up past/through/from Swindon? Or I could get to Oxford easily enough or Cheltenham or Gloucester slightly less easily.... I suppose I could just get a train anyway.....

Yes Pauline, we are very lucky in that there are roadways all around the site
and we are due to have the main drive resurfaced very soon.
There is a ramp into the pavilion and a disabled access toilet inside.
This is getting very exciting now with lots of you hoping to
come - I'm really looking forward to it and thank you Cam for
thinking of it in the first place! :blob7:

The is getting really really exciting.
Well, we have booked in at the Caravan Club site in Birmingham for that weekend. Someone will need to let us know nearer the time what food we will need to contribute.
I am so jealous, would love to come and see the cats, maybe I should move to Birmingham. Too far for me to travel, but have a good time, and will wait for all the lovely photographs. Allotment people are great, all my new friends are from the allotment, had a lovely bonfire today and a good chat.

Quite happy to bring cat and human food along !
Looking forward to it and thanks S-64 for hosting.
I hope to come. Enjoyed my last visit, it will be nice to see things a little later in the year.
No cat, but could bring some human food maybe if the weather behaves there might be something growing in my lottie to share.
Sounds like there will be a good crowd.
I hope to get there.
Hope to be there but the man in Leeds says he will be able to do stuff to my back. The NHS is never very sharp with its dates so maybe I'll still be sort of fit for purpose, but I think either train or a stopover would be wise.
Squash64 - cat food wise what would you like??? I am going to send you my number maybe we can have a chat?

You get off at Perry Barr station. 5 - 10 mins walk from there
Lets hope the snows melted by then
Just in case anyone has joined since we last posted about this,

Sorry to have to pull out I was so looking forward to it, but like Dan our daughter also went up Snowdon and came down engaged ! They have decided that this July is is the right date !!
You know the bit in Dads Army where Cpl Jones repeats " don't panic" needless to say etc.....
A bonus OH is about to finish all his DIY ....result . Wishing you all a great day.
Getting excited now, have moved to Halifax but still keen to come.
So what are we bringing /doing? I will probably b setting off from Near blackpool and comming down the M6 and so if anyone is along there and needs a lift perhaps we can arrange something?

Was thinking of bringing a bit of salady stuff (pasta or something). Would that be okay. Do we need any disposable plates/cutlery as well?
CAM: Remind me to bring the horeseradish that you forgot to collect :)
I made a mediteranean veg and feta quiche the other day that seemed to work so may have a go a that :toothy10:

Not long to go now....isn't it exciting!
The food you are bringing sounds lovely. I will make some cake, and

no need to bring any. There is plenty of cover in case it rains.
Our gates are kept locked (apart from Sunday mornings) and if we
leave them open for you, one of the plot holders is bound to lock
them anyway, they are very well-trained! Please pm me if you are coming

No, will pm you.
Would it be a good idea if we all wore some sort of a badge so
that we will know we are part of the group?
I can make some small badges, just saying something like
A4A visitor, or similar and give them to you at the gate.
What do you all think?
I was thinking of that too Betty. It would be very useful to have our names on it too so we know who everyone is. Perhaps something on the lines of:
A4A visitor
Forum Name
First name (if people don't mind giving it or it is not obvious from the forum name.)
Yours could be: A4A Organiser
Squash 64
Betty
Partners could have:
A4A Visitor
Partner of Paulines7
John
I am terrible at remembering names after I have been introduced and it would certainly be a great help to me.
Having just read that Pumpkinlover and Goodlife are going together, I was wondering if anyone else wants to car share? Maybe we should all say where we're coming from?
I'm in Tadcaster, near Leeds if anyone on my route wants to share.

Really looking forward to meeting people. What time are we meeting I hope to arrange to go and see a car in Wednesbury as well.
I've been looking back over the posts and it seemed to be agreed that we

12 is perfect for me, I have arranged a test drive of a WAV vehicle. My car is a very much loved Toyota Yaris Verso, but they have discontinued them. It turns from a car into a van in 4 minutes. I shall really miss it. But I need to be able to wheel my daughter in, I am getting too old to lift her and she is getting heavier.
I am hoping to leave home before we have airplanes coming in the back door and out of the front. It's worse than usual there are 5 aerobatic display teams going to Fairford. Even worse the wind is due to be from the East so they will be taking off in this direction as well. Terrible.
I cannot believe you have as many weeds as me, shall I bring my hoe? Or what about my digging hoe? With a whole gang of us, I am sure we can get you sorted in no time. :toothy10: Luckily without being watered quite a few of the weeds are giving up. But unfortunately not the couch grass.

Shirley and Tony will be there too.
See you all on Saturday at around 12.
I will contribute to lunch by making some free range egg and mayonnaise sandwiches. The eggs will be from my own hens. As we will be staying in Birmingham, I will make them up fresh on Saturday morning and keep them in the caravan fridge until the last minute.
It seems it will probably be another scorching hot day. Is there drinking water on the site Betty and shall we bring our own glasses? I could bring a bottle of squash if you have suitable water there.
I am looking forward to meeting you all.
The sandwiches sound lovely Pauline!
There is drinking water, but in this heat it will be luke warm. We do have
a fridge but it's only small. I think I will bring some water from home and keep it
in a cool bag. Squash would be a good idea, thank you. I'll bring some too.
We have lots of polystyrene cups if people don't mind using those, otherwise there
are mugs.
I'll put tables and chairs outside under the trees so it will be nice and shady there
for those (like me) who don't like the heat.
Was thinking of mushroom pate but haven't made it before. Got the ingredients, all I need now are very brave tasters.

Goodlife, you've got a wicked sense of humour!!!
:tongue3:
Lottie Lou, Mushroom pate sounds very nice indeed
:icon_cheers:
I will also bring chutney and pickle nicely matured by now!
Have cleaned toilets and replenished toilet roll. Sorry but it is rationed. Only 1 piece per person. :tongue3:
Wish I could be in on it, but sadly, not in the same country! Hope you all have a brilliant time, I will be thinking of you all!
What about courgette pie? :toothy10: I could put it on the engine to warm it up. I used to know someone who cooked eggs and bacon on their engine.
Wish I could be in on it, but sadly
I'm at the wrong end of the country! The drive would be too long for me these days - so, please folks - take lots of photos so that those of us who can only be there in spirit can see what you all get up to . Have fun in the sun :sunny:.

Sounds good. A bit of engine oil always adds something to a meal :toothy10:
Still a little clueless what to bring but will find something hehe brain not working in this heat! Honestly i was worried about rain for this meet not us all melting into a puddle :)
Will do best to be there for midday you got my number ?
LottyLou - Reminder about plant :)
Well, we've just done a couple of chicken & ham pies. Assuming that the jellied stock sets, and the whole thing doesn't disintegrate, we'll be bringing one of those.

I am getting peckish reading this thread!
Making the pate at the mo but it won't cool so I can wizz it up. Would a bit of couscous salad be okay to bring as well?
Swap/give away seed are sorted....cake done...driving instructions sorted...other 'bits and bobs' in order for a day..and now its all down to packing filling the car up and driving down :icon_cheers:
It is going to be brilliant! :icon_cheers: :sunny:
Are we tempting anybody else to join for the day?..its not too late to day YES
I'm really looking forward to it too.
Just sorted out a bag of tins in the pantry and found......
CAT FOOD !?!?!
Then I remembered !!!!!!!
I will bring along some iced coffee ideal to cool people down and some nice irish soda bread, butter nice on its own or with some pate i also bring along some cream cheese yum
Harriets really excited to come and see the allotments but will be packing the sun factor 50 if anyone forgets :)

Soda bread and REAL butter. Oh yum.
Haven't started the packing yet, still doing a bit of food.
Not long to go now.....
I think the best thing will be if I wait by the gate from around 11:45
but if you arrive earlier just give me a ring.
I'll have the badges with me, so once you are badged up you can make
your way to Reception :tongue3: at the top of the drive where Shirl
and committee member Pauline will give you a drink and show you where
our State of the Art Rest Rooms are.
We can put our food on a table under the trees and I'll cover it up with
a big cloth till we are all there and ready to eat.
Once we've finished eating, we could have a walk around the site but
only if you promise that when I show you my plot you make reassuring
comments about the weeds and general state of untidiness. (and I'll make
excuses about how I spend too much time talking and don't have much time
for weeding etc. etc.!)
Or if you prefer, you can wander around on your own.
And as Goodlife says, it's not too late to say you will come - the more
the merrier!
Sounds like a plan :) Well we have decided to shelve the idea of driving up tonight way 2 hot so going to drive up in the morning when its cooler :) will bring harriets doll "Elliot" and her buggy which will keep her occupied for a bit :) any roses that need dead heading just point harriet at them :) hehe
A long standing prior engagement meant that there no chance of me coming.
So stay cool, have a laugh and enjoy yourselves.
PS - Betty I would have loved to have met the cats, especially my favourite one!

I no you will all have a great day, sad I can't make it this time. Have a safe journey and lots of fun.
I'm afraid I'm going to whimp out, I'm sorry I won't be with you. My dog Kettle was spayed last week and she's not quite right yet so I'd sooner stay home. I hope you all have a good meet.

Still hoping to be there but had an exhausting day today so need some sleep before the long drive, and may have to call in to look at a campervan on the way (OH has seen it earlier this week but needs my approval!) so I probably won't make it for 12- start without me!

on way lovely cool morning ;)
Enjoy yourselves, everyone, wish we were in UK to join you, except it is as hot there as here, and I prefer to be under the trees in the shade, or in the cool of our old house with thick walls!
Look forward to seeing some photos!
Can't wait to hear how the day has gone :toothy10:
If I needed a reason to get on here more then it happened today. Met some old friends and new ones. All in all a splendid day. Cannot wait to do it all again. Thank you to all who came to see us at Walsall rd. Do come again soon.
I've had a really lovely day!
I tried to take a lot of photos but most of them seem to be of
people eating - wonder why that is! I did intend to take a formal
group photo but then totally forgot, sorry.
The seed swap went down a treat with hundreds of packets of seeds
and lots of plants too.
The food was lovely, we could have fed double the amount of people.
Thank you to those who wrote to wish us well for the day, I think it
was a success! Sorry that some of you who wanted to come couldn't
make it, maybe next time?
Some of you met the cats. Galina met Psycho and she deserves a medal

Last picture is Betty
Oooh Pumpkinlover, that photo of me....forgot about my hat - I look like one of Frankenstein's monsters with a big join in my neck.
Shirl, may I have your recipe for the lovely pickled courgettes please? Thanks May
It was a good thing I decided to wait by the gate for people to arrive because for some
unknown reason my phone had decided not to work, and I didn't find out about it till the
evening when I tried to ring my son. I removed and then replaced the battery and everything
was fine then, except that a text from DebP was there, telling me that she couldn't make
the meeting. I had forgotten to put her number in the phone so I couldn't ring to see if
everything was alright. If I had, I would have seen that the gremlins had got to the
phone and I could have sorted it. Never mind, Deb was alright and that was the main
thing.
I'm so glad everyone enjoyed the day, I know we did and we are very happy to
do it again.

Can you post please as I was going to ask for the same thing. It might even be a way of getting Mr PKL to enjoy eating them!
It was a great day out, loved it !! Thank you all very much.
I now have a great collection of flowers and beans to plant next year.
And I slept like a log last night, best nights sleep for weeks with all that food inside me.
Thanks all.
Thanks for the pictures, they're fab. So nice to share a little bit of the day, it looks like everyone had a super time :toothy10:
Wow that food looks good :drunken_smilie:
It was really lovely meeting people. I had a lovely time though arrived very stressed. I really do need a stat nav, I should have borrowed one from my daughter. Just seen where Aldridge was, not clear why I ended up there. But once there it is like Ikea you cannot find the way out.
I do so much love seeing the Walsall road allotments. Someone had some excellent onions only about three inches apart. They seemed to be growing in 100% compost. I wish we had more of a community spirit as well.
I could not believe how far on peoples beans are, everyone on our site is really struggling.
I would love the elderflower cordial recipe please, that was lovely especially with the fizzy water. Big thank you to everyone.

Shirlton's gooseberry bushes are trained as a fan! Makes picking so much easier. Now how do I get my bushes looking like that?
Layered sweetpeas with all the flowers prominently pointing upwards. How unusual. Golden hops on archways.
And their courgettes are in full production!!! The beetroots are so good, the birds are trying to have some too, so had to be netted.
Fabulous plots.
The whole site is looking good. Almost all plots immaculately tended. One already had pounds of runnerbeans hanging off their plants. And the size of some of the onions!!!
It is a gardening inspiration to come and visit Wallsall Road and we were very lucky to have a guided tour. Everything looked lovely and lush.
Digeroo. in case you haven't spotted it, the link to the cordial recipe is im my post earlier in this thread! ;)
Next year I shall be quizzing OH about cricket dates. It looks like you all had a fantabulous time. Lovely to put faces to names. The pictures are great & I love the one for Ace :icon_cheers:.
Sorry I couldn't make it in the end, I had to sort a bit of a crisis for my mum (all ok now) my family are a bit thrilled though coz they got to eat 16 choc chip muffins I had made to bring with me! I was a bit worried I had texted a total stranger when I didn't get a reply from Betty yesterday, but phone trouble explains it all. That food looked scrummy too, oh well, next time eh!
Glad you all had a great day, lots of great piccies but as said could only work out a few names to the faces. :sunny:
Just managed to get on line at the campsite. :blob7:
What a wonderful, wonderful day; John and I enjoyed it immensely. We would especially like to thank Betty and Shirl for all the hard work they put in. Thanks also to their plot friend Pauline who helped with food and drinks etc. Also, a thank you to Cam whose idea it was.
It was lovely to meet everyone and what lovely food and drink supplied by all. The photos on here are excellent. If you haven't worked out who is who yet, just put the photo number on here and one or other of us will be able to enlighten you.
I don't have an allotment, only a very big garden. I was surprised at how friendly and chatty the plot holders were and how they all seemed to know each other. It was good to see how others arrange their vegetable gardens and what can be used to support netting etc. A pleasant surprise was to see how many flowers were grown on plots too. I really wasn't expecting that.
It was a really great day and thank you to everyone for a most enjoyable time. I am looking forward to next year now!
Well i am so thrilled that it all went well i arrived to find the group from A4A sitting around in a circle with much nattering going on and to a warm reception and lots of hugs. In fact it reminded me of a family reunion where people only normally get together for funerals and weddings warm and welcoming with a touch of "who are you :)" although thanks to betty & Shirley for there organisation skills we all had little name badges and there tender cares made it so much more a family feel event.
The day was pretty perfect and its the most fun i have had in quite a while :) Harriet had a great time and has a bag of seeds for the nursery so they can grow cress now and sunflowers next year the seed swap was great and thanks to melborne12 for such a generous selection i have bagged up some seeds other people and there going into the post monday :) Even the husband had a great time lots of NON veg growing nattering going on as well hehe
Big hugs have to go the Berry and Shirley for all there hard work i know they did not stop for the day making tea and making sure everyone was happy and i know from speaking to everyone there and the posts here we really appreciate you hard work and if you will have us back next year we should do this again most defiantly :)
Big hugs to everyone who can make it xx
Cam
^^ yes, exactly, what Pauline and Cam have said has summarised what we all think.
Well, I have some Siberian Wallflowers to sow this afternoon and may put a few Swedish One Dot beans in the tub in the poly as I can't wait for next year to grow them.
Like Digeroo, I got lost and ended up at another allotment site called Thornbridge, Had a mini panic attack (or as my sister would call it: a tantrum) and thought about just driving home again but for once, good sense got the better of me and I'm really glad it did.
Note to self: buy a satnav.

We're a bit late on-line today, so everything has been said, really.
It was just a fabulous day out. I'd like to add our thanks for the hard work of organisation to Betty and Shirley, and to everyone for the delicious picnic lunch contributions.
The walk round the allotment site was very interesting, and we picked up some good ideas - especially the cordon gooseberries.

Thank you for all your kind comments about yesterday.
I forgot to thank you all for bringing cat food!
PL, I don't mind if you add names to my photos, thank you.
Melbourne, the photos are lovely and I recognised every plot (and the mens' toilets!)
I've just been sorting through the seeds which Mrs Melbourne very kindly left for me
and even after everyone has helped themselves there are at least 400 packets left!
I'm going to try to sell them and the money will go to the Lymphoma charity which
I support.
Goodlife brought lots of Daubenton's Kale plants for us and told me I could keep
what was left. I sent an email to our plot holders this morning that it was for sale
at 40p per plant (don't really know if that's too cheap or not) and it's sold out!

It's always difficult to know how much to charge isn't it! I've planted the ones
I had and if they do well I'll try to get cuttings off them.
I sold Collards and Italian Kale a couple of months ago and they went really well too. I think people
like to try something a little different.
Thanks again for bringing them.

Let your plants to grow as big as possible for this year as they need to harden off for winter..next spring your plants will 'sprout' like mad and that is good cutting material for quick rooting and quick sale :icon_cheers:
Did anyone have a chat with the hand dryer moaner fella, I'd have really been tempted to gee him up. :icon_cheers:

Betty, do you have a poster advertising your open day? If so could you send me a copy and I'll put it up on our site. Was on the shed (our shop) this AM and telling people what a great time I. I had a bit of interest regarding your site.
That's kind of you LL. Yes, we do have a poster. Would you pm me your address please?
Some of Galina's photos -
The one of the three cats together is quite rare because Wanda and E.T. are
usually too frightened of Psycho to go close to her!
