Has anyone ever grown capers from seed? And I mean 'anyone' and I mean 'ever'.
I've just had my seeds arrived and have been confronted by the following sowing instructions.
1 Soak in warm water for 24 hours
2 put in a polythene bag in the fridge for 6 weeks
3 soak in warm water for 24 hours
4 sow 1cm deep in 3/5 soil, 1/5 sand, 1/5 small gravel
wait for it.......
allow 3-9 months for germination.
The question is, will I live to see capers in my greenhouse?
LOL
good luck!
And if you're going to wait that long, wait for the REAL thing - the Caperberries (bottom)!!
btw, how do you keep your soaking water 'warm' for that amount of time ???
Stand it on the side of the AGA!!
I thought that nastirtium seed was capers? Or is it just an alternative
I tried last year, and a couple popped up, and then whithered and died! And yup, soaked, then left in a jamjar in the fridge. Lot os labour for a household where capers are rarely used. :-\
Good luck indeed,I have given up trying.

That's what I love about this site - the encouragement. :D
Whoahahahaha!
DJ Titter :)
Nasturtium seed? A very poor con trick!!
Well I would have been fooled as I've never eaten a caper or a nasturtium seed and wouldn't know the difference. I bet it's easier to produce a nasturtium seed though ;D
Along with their blackfly!!
Ive eaten lots of nastusium seeds and I don't think they taste anything lke capers.....9 months germination...do you plant them on april 1st ?
You'd be a fool not to ;)
What's really funny is why I'm bothering at all. As far as I know I've only ever had capers once, which was in a London hotel and coincided with an evening where I drank somewhere between 1 and 9 bottles of red wine. Sorry I can't be more specific. I'm still amazed that I never got a dry cleaning bill for the room carpet after I projectile vomited at 5 a.m.
I blame the capers. I've had red wine since and no vomiting so it must have been.
It must have been the capers. Red wine doesn't usually make one sick even in quite copious amounts. It might give you a bit of a headache though ;D
capers are lovely.
use a lot in tomato sauce to go with pasta, or use a lot in a mustard (white) sauce to go with boiled eggs and potatoes.
HMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmm :D
Love capers and red wine, but won't be trying to grow either - do let us know how you get on though!!
