Title: pH and moisture...
Post by: aquilegia on March 08, 2005, 09:36:56
I was out playing with my new pH/moisture meter at the weekend.

It seems my pond is wet! phew! (also neutral, so that's good).

But my veg patch and manure heap also measure at the same wetness as the pond. I've got my shallots, garlic and aquadulche broadies in the veg patch. Will they be ok?

Various places round my garden, including the veg patch, measured at around 6 or 7. Is that ok for most veg? How much lime should I add for brassicas?

Aqilla 6-7 sounds fine for veggies .Nice and neutral...
Here is a link that seems useful Re PH and how to raise or lower it ..Jim

That's a good one, growmore. Haven't had time to absorb it all.

Aqui - the only things that might like special treatment are your potatoes.

For brassica, 6oz/sqyd is the usual dose - every couple of years.

Tim - so how do I make it more acidic? (I don't do peat!)

Adding any organic matter lowers the Ph. The norm is to add on the potato rotation to avoid scab then raise it again on the brassica rotation.

You obviously haven't read the link??

Organics, yes - but also Sulphate of Ammonia I believe.

For potatoes, if you have comfrey to hand, stick a leaf in the trench, then stick your seed spud on top (dunno if you want a little bit of soil on top of the comfrey leaf) - think this method is used to combat scab.
