I wasn't expecting my strawberries to be delivered until March/April but they've arrived and I've got the roots soaking in water. With more snow forecast will I kill them if I plant them out now and cover them with straw? I'll also be planting through weed supressant fabric which I hope will give some frost protection. The alternative is to keep them in the garage and keep the roots damp but now sure how long I can do this for. Any advice appreciated.
Thanks.
Strawberries are tough so you can plant them now or heel them in until better planting weather arrives.
Good idea about a little straw protection until they get used to outside conditions. Till they are established as it's not the cold but drying winds that they are most vulnerable to. :happy7:
Thanks Ed. That's really helpful. :)
Mine are going in the unheated (one door is open) greenhouse in pots when they arrive, once they start to perk up they can go out in late March after hardening off...
They are pretty tough cookies. I think they would prefer to be planted out rather than soaked in water. It is supposed to be warming up tomorrow.
I had some delivered in late October, put them in poly pots in the greenhouse and have kept them just about damp. They are really doing well.
Dont soak them for long- you will drown them!! honest..
Mine turned up today and will be going in pots at the weekend... they can stay in the parcel till then, but outside in the carport...
