The same variety is on sale as International Kidney if not grown in Jersey. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

I grow the International Kidney and find they do well for me in my heavy clay soil.

Hi all,
I,ve grown them for the last 2 years last year was just total loss low yeild and full of what i think were slug and worm hole's and year before they fell apart when cooking, i have been told they fall apart when cooking is due to dry weather??? 2 bad years on the go not sure to try again but i do love the taste of jersy royals???
saying that i've grown winston for the last 4 years with no problems and they are a very close second to jerseys

Steve.

Hi all,

I bought some international kidney to try this year as they are described to be the same as jerseys. Looking forward to trying them.

It's an odd sort of potato.  I don't doubt that International Kidey are the same as Jersey Royals, but on our clay soil, the turn out very different.  Rather than a waxy salad potato, they seem to be more like a floury mashing potato, especially if they are left in the soil for any length of time.

It's not done very well for me, either, I was disappointed with the flavour as well as the texture. I suspect you need the right sort of soil to achieve that Jersey Royal taste.

Her indoors says that even Jersey Royals don't taste like they used to... Read recently that apparently they have stopped using shedloads of dead seaweed on them (at least for the ones in ordinary shops).

Sounds like a smoking gun to me (??).

Maybe someone suffering from disappointing JRs near the coast could add seaweed and tell us what happens?

Cheers.

My mother was from Jersey and always said the taste wasn't the same and certainly the shape which should be kidney shape. She told me that not only was seaweed used but also Guano(sp) which I think is seabird and seal droppings!
