Title: Such a cruel thing to do
Post by: Squash64 on January 31, 2013, 16:04:45
I had a really upsetting phone call last night from a friend Sue,  telling me that
another friend Jean, had died suddenly.

Jean and her husband were neighbours who moved to live in the country a few
years ago and she was really well-known and popular locally.

I told as many neighbours as I could, and people started buying sympathy cards
and writing letters to her husband. I was planning on going to the funeral with
my husband and son.

I decided I would phone Jean's husband, not something I was looking forward to doing but
it seemed like the right thing to do.

He answered the phone really cheerfully and asked me how I was.  I was a bit surprised
but some men don't show emotion so I said I was okay, but how was he?

He said he was fine, still sounding cheerful.

I told him I was ringing up about Jean and he asked me why.  Then I knew something
wasn't quite right and I suddenly didn't know what to say.  Eventually I managed to tell
him that I'd heard she had died and he said "She was fine this morning, she's at work
now"

I was so relieved I could hardly speak!

I phoned Sue straight away to tell her the good news and although she is really happy
that Jean hasn't died, she is wondering why someone would phone her with this sort
of news.

Has anyone else ever had this sort of thing happen?

I'm hoping that the person who phoned Sue had got the wrong number and didn't
realise but it's a bit of a coincidence because he knew Sue's husband's name.

Very strange and such a cruel thing to do, but thank goodness Jean is alive!

Could it be that it was simply a wrong number and the names were a coincidence?

Very distressing for all concerned. Let's hope it was an innocent accident. Quite awful to think  that anyone would do it deliberately.

I just phoned Jean and thank goodness she has taken her 'death' well.

She said she got home from work and asked her husband how his day
had been and if anyone had phoned.  When he told her she couldn't
stop laughing.

I'm hoping it was just a coincidence too because if anyone did it deliberately
they have a serious problem.

I expect the original message 3 or 4 people ago was that Jean had died her hair.

Mark Twain had a lovely expression which was that reports of his death have been greatly exaggerated.

Perhaps it was just some kind of mix up.  My mother was great at getting the wrong end of the stick and then passing on erroneous information.   She did not mean to do it, but she often sparked embarrassing situations due to various misconceptions.

Love it ACE I am sure you are right.
