Hi all
I am trying to find seed for pickling onions. So far all I can find are the silverskin type which are not as strong......can anyone help :happy7:
We usually pickle shallo.tts which we grow from sets, never grown them from seed but some on here have :happy7:
I grew these last year and won best pickled onions at our local show;

This year I am growing Onion de Paris. They are more difficult to find now but DT Brown sell them.
I just pickle my small shallots instead of onions, it's easier!
Thanks Guys,
I will try those Geof.
I am giving Giant Zittau a go this year for pickling:

But got my seed from the Lottie Kings Seeds order.
Thanks Ellen thats more the sort of onion I am looking to try. While trawling the internet this morning I came across a brown pickling onion called SY 300. Cant seem to find anyone that supplies its seed though.
Dobies - http://productwiki.co.uk/dobies/vegetable-seeds/onion-pickling-brown-pickling-sy300-seeds-average-seeds-500-wiki/437708.htm
Thanks for the link Geof. Unfortunately it dosent seem to work. Looked on Dobies site but they dont have these seeds now.
SY300, Giant Zittau or Cippollini... or grow shallots from seed, Creatioin F1 and "especially" Prisma F1 are lovely pickled...
Blimey, thats a name i've not heard in a long while, the great mario cippollin, Liquigas rider if i remember right. never heard of onion seed by that name, any idea where it might be got?
Thanks chriscross,
Managed to find cipollini seed at Nickys Nursery. They are listed as Borettana 95p for 200 seeds a bargain. Ordered a few other things while looking and the postage was very reasonable £1.55. There you go davejg thats where I found some.
Of course, my mistake....The Lion King shares his name with the Italian word for a small flat onion :D.... Borettana di soto Aceti is indeed the specific variety I've grown before....
Thanks i' give them a go
