Title: Leek seedlings in cold greenhouse?
Post by: RobinOfTheHood on January 26, 2013, 13:49:00
I have Autumn Giant and Musselburgh happily sitting on the windowsill. Can I safely move them to an unseated g/h (need to make room for the chillies!), do they mind frost if it comes?

I don't know.  Do you have problems with your legs or arms? Do you suffer from giddy spells?  Why don't you have seats in your g/h?  Is it to deter unwanted visitors?  Have you had a bad experience with seats in g/h?

Sorryyyy  could not help myself  :blob7:

I have started leeks and onions indoors and then transferred them to my cold frame ( I must say it is really cold these days).  I put them into a clear plastic bag and sealed the bag making sure that they were not inhibited from growing.  I put them in at the beginning of January and they are still doing ok.  The plastic bag is big enough to form their own climate that stays fairly consistent these days.  So give it a go.  I am thinking of doing the same with spinach and chard soon.

And sorry to poke fun again but i just could not help myself.

Enjoy your gardening  :glasses9:

I sowed mine a few days ago inside to get them to germinate quickly. When they are up I shall put them straight in a cold greenhouse to grow on.

Early sowing can be helpful if you want good sized plants for summer transplanting or for autumn cropping or both.

Many years they get sown in said cold greenhouse late jan/early feb and I have had some good crops that way. Leeks are quite tough and a frost or two won't cause them any harm.

Generally leaks are straightforward to grow. Heaven knows why they are always so expensive in the shops. :happy3:

Hello all.

I normally wait until late Feb to sow mine, but think I'll try some as suggested here. What height do you let them get to before taking them out to a cold frame?

Regards

Excellent, thanks all. As soon as I have somewhere for them to sit, maybe a sofa, I'll get them moved.

Bill, I had to read it 3 times........

Started our pot leeks off on the windowsill, they are nearly at transplanting size so will go into the cold poly until then  :happy7:

Leeks are as tough as they come. I plant them early, put them in a mini-greenhouse, and they germinate whenever it warms up enough for them.
