That's a lot of lovely food for the birds. We bought a squirrel proof one from Wilkies, it wasn't expensive & it works. I did buy a coconut shell with food in it so I could refill it but the squirrel Had other ideas. We watched him leg it down the garden with it in tow.

I don't know about squirrels but it's when you get these that you need to worry!!   :dontknow:

Were you able to get rid of the rats Pauline? I sometimes see a tiny field mouse on the ground under the feeders, but have mouse traps down in the shed and haven't had any problems there for a couple of years.

And sod's law - I haven't seen a squirrel in the garden since putting up the new feeders. Still they do look so much better than the plastic ones so I'm happy  :happy7:

Squirrels love coconut, we regularly put them out for ours (we are luckey to have the native reds as regular visitors). We also have two hazelnut boxes high in the Cherry at the bottom of the garden, they never bother the bird feeders.

regards Ian

They seem to come every year.  We got rid of the ones in September 2011 but then had another lot when they cut the cereal crops in September 2012.  At the beginning of this invasion, some of my 3 month old chickens got out of their temporary run as they had learnt how to fly.  I went up the garden to round them up, only to find one chicken sitting in a corner with a rat perched on top of its head!!  The chicken was unharmed though but how cheeky was that rat!  I wish I'd had a camera with me.  We put down the rat bait again and haven't seen any since but it is a constant battle with rats, living in the countryside.
