Title: French anyone?
Post by: katynewbie on November 20, 2012, 18:32:54
I have bought some heirloom tomato seeds for a friend in France. He speaks no English and my French is not up to saying that these are special seeds! So can anyone tell me how to write and explain on the card, please? The seeds are an ancient French variety called Jaune Flammee, they look fab!

Thanks

My french is very rusty these days and I was never very fluent but:
These tomato seeds are an ancient variety - Ces semences de tomate sont une variété ancienne

Your favourite search engine ought to provide a variety of type-in-English-get-an-answer-in-Foreign websites.

HTH.

My illustrated tomato bible "Les Tomates dans mon jardin" by Victor Renaud is actually written in French... the pictures are good though!
For Flammee (Jaune)
Croissance: indeterminee, variete de mi-saison
Fruits: jaunes, lisses,en grappes de 2a 4 interieurdes fruits creux; les graines sont groupees au centre du cote du pedoncule, l'ensemblede ces grainesressemblant a une fraise.
Poids : 70g environ (14 ua kg).
Forme: apparence d'un piment doux carre, lobe.
Chair: peu epaisse.
Saveur: peu parfumee, douce, de qualite gustative moyenne.
Utilisation: tomate a farcir.
Plante vigerouse possedant de grandes feuilles.

So basically it is a vigorous plant with big leaves. It looks like a yellow sweet pepper and weighs about 70 grammes per fruit. It isn't a bush and is mid-season.

Saddad pretty much said it all.

If you want to add a friendly word before, you might want to say:

Je t'envoie des graines de tomate, d'une variété ancienne, pour agrémenter ton potager. J'espère que tu auras de belles, grosses tomates et beaucoup de plaisir à les cultiver.

(I am sendning you some heirloom tomato seeds to brighten up your veggie garden. I hope that you get some nice fat tomatoes and that you enjoy growing them).

I can translate something else if you want to add more to the message ;)
